Treating Acne with Nutritional Dermatology

Treating Acne with nutritional dermatology, Acne Skin Clinic Manchester.

Acne is an inflammatory disorder of the skin that happens when hair follicles under the skin become clogged. Sebum (oil that helps keep skin from drying out) and dead skin cells plug the pores, which leads to outbreaks of lesions, commonly called pimples or zits. Most often, the outbreaks occur on the face but can also appear on the back, chest, and shoulders. If you have acne, you might notice a mix of lesions. Whiteheads and blackheads, both referred to as comedones, are the most common acne lesions. Inflammatory lesions, which are more likely to cause scarring of your skin, include papules, pustules, nodules and cysts.

Acne is thought to effect more than 78% of teenagers, whilst it generally subsides before the age of 20, for some individuals it continues into adulthood, referred to as adult acne. At Dermanude we have developed our acne programme to include more than bespoke in-clinic treatments and medical grade homecare, we have been investigating how nutrition may play a role in the presence and severity of acne lesions.

Dietary Changes to Improve Skin Health

Whilst we all have different nutrition and health goals, it’s important to us that we provide clients with an understanding of how the foods we consume may be causing inflammation in our body. This is particularly important when working with our acne clients. We have developed a programme that will allow us to delve into the effects of known triggers and how these food sources influence the formation and severity of acne lesions. This will enable our clients to make informed decisions about their nutrition with their long-term skin health in mind.

Lifestyle Changes to Improve Skin Health

The Dermanude Acne Programme also provides clients with an insight into how external factors, such as sleep and stress, can impact the formation and severity of acne. We understand that a condition like acne needs to be approached from every aspect to increase the effectiveness and success of a client’s journey with us. That’s why we have provided sleep and stress management tools in our programme to help you implement better habits at home that will improve not just your acne, but your overall wellbeing.

How your Hormones are Impacting Your Skin Condition

Hormonal acne affects both men and women, but most cases occur in women, pregnant women and women going through menopause. Hormonal acne can develop when hormonal changes increase the amount of oil your skin produces. The oil interacts with bacteria in the pores of your skin where hair grows (hair follicle) and can result in acne lesions. Clogged pores can be the result of an over production of the sebaceous glands, dead skin cells and bacteria. While we cannot provide products or treatment than improve a person’s hormones, we can provide clients with the education they need to be able to determine if what they are experiencing is “normal” or if they feel that they may need to be referred due to a suspected hormone imbalance. Over the years we have treated so many different women, some with PCOS, some with other hormonal imbalance such as endometriosis & adenomyosis (I suffer with both endo & adeno) so understand how frustrating it can be when the state of our hormones effect our other systems, such as our skin and gut.
